Learning opportunities and support for those with caring responsibilities at home
who are working in the finance and business sector in the Leeds City Region
Staff are vital to the success of a business,
but sometimes personal demands can change the way they perform.
Especially if they’re caring for a loved one at home.
New research by Carers UK (4th February 2019) reveals that:
1 in 7 in the UK workforce is caring for a loved one
More than 600 people quit work to look after old and disabled relatives every day
In terms of the Leeds City Region and the Finance and Business sector, this equates to approximately 12,500 of the sectors workforce statistically being a carer potentially looking after a loved one who is older, disabled or seriously ill.
Caring responsibilities can be a significant barrier to accessing skills to support sustainable employment and in-work progression opportunities. Most commonly working carers report having primarily chosen to forego the ‘rewards’ of their work in order to provide care.*
As a result employers are also losing talented people in whom they have invested significant time and money. The peak age for caring (45-64) is also the point at which people are most likely to have developed the skills employers need to succeed.
